Philippe Mathieu

Biography

After a spell in the family stone-cutting business, Philippe Mathieu studied architectural heritage conservation in Venice. In 1984 he moved to Brussels, where he made furniture for private commission. At the same time he also worked on personal projects which were several times the subject of ‘appels permanents' from the VIA. In 1988 he worked in Paris as project leader in the ‘atelier de décors' of the Manudecor show. In particular he collaborates with directors such as Peter Brook, Jérôme Deschamps, Jacques Rivette, Jérôme Savary and Luciano Pintillé. In 1994 he moved into designing event scenography. In 2005 he founded l'Atelier de Scénographie, working on the fitting-out of spaces and the design of furniture for businesses and contracts.
